The FIFA World Cup is widely regarded as the most influential sporting event in the world. It surpasses even the Olympics in audience reach, media exposure, and economic impact. For sports betting, the World Cup drives the largest global wagering volumes. Analysts expect the 2026 tournament to exceed the record figures set during Qatar 2022.
Record Betting Turnover in Qatar 2022
A study by Barclays estimated that the 2022 Qatar World Cup generated $35 billion in global sports betting turnover. This is a 65% increase from the 2018 Russia World Cup. This steady growth highlights the World Cup’s role as a key driver of wagering activity worldwide.
Market analysts predict even higher numbers in 2026, supported by structural changes in major markets and expanded digital access. Furthermore, the normalization of regulated betting in several countries contributes to this prediction.
Brazil’s Growing Influence on Global Betting
One of the most significant developments ahead of 2026 is Brazil’s emergence as a major regulated betting market. According to Betlaw, roughly 10% of the global betting volume for the tournament—around R$19 billion—will come from Brazil.
In 2025, Brazil completed its first full year under a regulated betting framework. This enabled it to rank as the fifth-largest betting market globally, behind only the US, UK, Russia, and Italy. This regulatory milestone positions Brazil as a major source of liquidity for international sports betting ahead of major events.
Brazilian Operators Eye Long-Term Growth
The 2026 World Cup, running from June 11 to July 19 across Canada, the United States, and Mexico, presents Brazilian operators with a strategic growth opportunity. Marco Túlio, CEO of Ana Gaming (operators of 7K, Cassino, and Vera), emphasized the tournament’s social and cultural impact. He noted that casual viewers and families contribute to higher engagement and betting activity.
He explained that the event transforms match-watching into a shared social experience, increasing audience interaction with entertainment and wagering. As a result, betting volumes during the World Cup consistently exceed the usual sports calendar.
A Key Driver for Global Betting Growth
Analysts also highlight regulatory evolution as a major growth factor. Pietro Cardia Lorenzoni, Legal Director of ANJL Brazil and Betlaw partner, noted that legal expansions in the US after 2018 significantly increased betting volumes for Qatar 2022. He believes Brazil’s population, football culture, and digital adoption will have a similar global impact in 2026.
With the expanded tournament format, multi-country hosting, and stronger regulated markets, the 2026 World Cup is expected to set a new benchmark for global sports betting. If projections hold, surpassing $35 billion in wagers will demonstrate not only increased demand but also greater market maturity. Transparency and international integration in the betting ecosystem will also be highlighted.
