Thailand has intensified its crackdown on illegal casinos and scam operations along the Cambodian border ahead of a key diplomatic summit with Cambodia. The first Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) meeting in over a decade is scheduled for June 14 in Phnom Penh.
Although tensions at the border have eased, Thai officials say the situation remains delicate. In response, authorities plan to cut electricity and internet access to known scam centers and gambling hubs operating just inside Cambodian territory. These actions underscore Thailand’s commitment to securing the border.
Joint Efforts Signal De-Escalation
At a press briefing on Monday, Nikorndej Balankura, Director-General of the Department of Information, confirmed that joint Thai-Cambodian forces inspected the Choam Bok checkpoint. Both sides agreed to pull back to earlier positions and cover up defensive trenches — a clear move toward reducing friction ahead of the summit.
The JBC, originally formed in 2000 to handle border demarcation, last met in 2012. Officials on both sides now hope the upcoming session will revive long-stalled cooperation and strengthen ties with Thailand.
Tougher Measures Against Cross-Border Crime
Thailand’s Border Threat Prevention Command Center is preparing a list of security actions, including:
- Disconnecting power and internet in scam and illegal casino zones
- Blocking goods and tech linked to cybercrime
- Enhancing surveillance of cross-border movement
In a coordinated move, both nations have also reduced visa-free entry periods from 60 days to just seven. No timeline has been given for reinstating the previous policy, reflecting Thailand’s cautious approach.
Public Urged to Stay Calm
Some border communities have expressed concern over potential unrest. However, the Thai Foreign Ministry has urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could escalate tensions.
While the agenda for the JBC talks is still being finalized, Thailand is expected to raise four disputed areas — a proposal Cambodia has so far resisted. This highlights the ongoing diplomatic efforts of Thailand.

Despite lingering challenges, Thai authorities remain cautiously optimistic. Officials stress that diplomatic engagement and tighter security coordination will be essential for lasting stability and the effective suppression of cross-border crime, especially in regions impacting Thailand.
