Sydney Man Charged in AU$2M Online Gambling Scam

Sydney

A 23-year-old man from Sydney is set to appear in Bankstown Local Court on Wednesday. He is charged in connection with an alleged AU$2 million online gambling scam that defrauded over a dozen victims in Sydney.

According to news.com.au, New South Wales Police launched an investigation in August 2023 after receiving several reports about a suspicious Sydney-based online betting scheme. Authorities believe at least 14 people were tricked into thinking the operation was a legitimate gambling platform. These individuals went on to lose substantial sums of money.

The suspect voluntarily presented himself at Bankstown Police Station on Tuesday. He now faces 14 charges. These include dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage by deception, producing false documents for financial gain, and demanding with menaces.

Online betting scams have become a growing threat in Australia. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) recently warned about the rise of fraudulent gambling platforms. These are designed to lure victims with promises of quick returns.

Sydney Police are continuing their investigation to determine whether more individuals were affected or if others helped facilitate the alleged scam.

The man remains in custody in Sydney and is expected to appear before a magistrate to respond to the charges.
