Malaysia: 328 Arrested in Nationwide Illegal Gambling Crackdown

Malaysia

Malaysian police arrested 328 people in a two-day nationwide operation targeting illegal gambling dens in Malaysia, according to The New Straits Times.

The large-scale raid, dubbed Op Dadu Mega, was conducted on 30–31 August by the Federal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) with support from state-level units. This operation reflects ongoing efforts in Malaysia.

Raids and Seizures

Authorities inspected 395 premises and confirmed gambling activities at 272 of them. These included:

  • 245 outlets selling unauthorised lottery tickets
  • 20 online gambling centres
  • 5 unlicensed family entertainment venues
  • 2 call centres managing gambling operations

Police seized cash, computers, gambling machines, and other digital devices linked to the activities in Malaysia.

Arrests and Charges

Those arrested included 286 men and 42 women, comprising operators, staff, and players. Of the total, 258 were Malaysian nationals and 70 were foreigners.

Investigators are pursuing charges under the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953. Offenders face fines ranging from RM10,000 (US$2,150) to RM200,000 (US$43,000) and prison sentences of up to five years. Several foreign nationals are also being investigated under the Immigration Act, which allows for whipping in addition to fines and jail terms. Such enforcement in Malaysia is crucial.

Ongoing Enforcement

CID director Datuk M. Kumar said enforcement will continue and urged the public to report suspicious activities, thereby maintaining safety in Malaysia.
