Brazil has updated its betting regulations, now allowing Counter-Strike, Valorant, and Fortnite for fixed-odds betting.
The Ministry of Sport announced the change through an ordinance in the Diário Oficial da União, Brazil’s official government publication. Previously, only IOC-recognized games qualified for betting, which excluded most shooter games. This update modifies Law No. 14.790/2023, which governs betting events in Brazil.
Key Changes in Esports Betting
The new regulation permits fixed-odds betting on esports tournaments, as long as developers or intellectual property holders license or authorize the games. This opens the door for betting on shooter games that were previously excluded, extending beyond traditional Olympic sports like chess, cycling, and motorsport.
While Fortnite appeared in the 2023 Olympic Esports Week, it featured a target-shooting format, not the standard mode. Now, the rule allows betting on the regular Fortnite mode and other top esports titles.
A Growing Market for Betting
Brazil’s online betting market continues to grow rapidly. The Central Bank of Brazil estimates that Brazilians spend between BR20bn and BR30bn ($5.28bn – $7.92bn) monthly on online betting. More than 100 betting operators now hold licenses to operate under the updated regulations, reflecting the market’s expansion since its official launch in 2023.
