British Horseracing Authority Unveils New Environmental Strategy

British Horseracing

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has partnered with the Racing Foundation to introduce a comprehensive environmental strategy, designed to enhance sustainability across UK horseracing. Together, the organizations aim to reduce the sport’s environmental impact while securing its long-term future.

Key Focus Areas

The strategy emphasizes reducing carbon emissions, preserving water resources, minimizing waste, and protecting nature and ecosystems. In addition, it builds on previous initiatives within the industry that helped address environmental risks associated with horseracing activities. By coordinating these measures, the BHA and Racing Foundation hope to create a consistent and measurable approach to sustainability.

Five-Year Program Funded by Racing Foundation

Fully funded by the Racing Foundation, the strategy is set to be implemented over an initial five-year period. During this time, the BHA will focus on collecting and analyzing environmental data, particularly regarding greenhouse gas emissions and overall natural impact. Following this assessment, the authority plans to identify potential funding sources to support ongoing sustainability initiatives.

Recent Industry Context

The strategy arrives during a busy period for the BHA. Earlier this month, Charles Allen was formally appointed Chair of the Authority, while the wider horseracing industry staged strike action in response to proposed tax rises in the UK. Meanwhile, the BHA also released new horse welfare e-learning modules for racing employees, highlighting its ongoing commitment to ethical practices.

A recent study by the BHA indicated that horse welfare remains the most significant challenge for the industry’s sustainable future.

Leadership Perspectives

Katie Carr, BHA Head of Environmental Sustainability, emphasized the connection between horseracing success and environmental health:

“The success of British racing and breeding is intrinsically linked to the health of our natural environment. It’s therefore essential for breeding, training, and racing thoroughbred horses that we all take action to protect it.”

Complementing this, Racing Foundation CEO Tansy Challis added:

“The Racing Foundation is proud to support this strategy, which provides a clear roadmap for the industry to contribute meaningfully to environmental sustainability. By coordinating efforts across the sector, we can drive measurable progress and benefit horses, people, and communities alike.”

Looking Ahead

Overall, the BHA and Racing Foundation’s new environmental strategy lays the foundation for a greener, more sustainable horseracing industry. With a structured five-year plan, clear focus areas, and strong leadership support, UK horseracing is well-positioned to make a meaningful positive impact on both the environment and its broader community.
