GambleAware Launches New Resources to Support Neurodivergent People

GambleAware has released a comprehensive report and specialist resources designed to improve support for neurodivergent individuals affected by gambling harm. As part of its ongoing commitment to safer gambling initiatives, the charity aims to close long-standing gaps in treatment accessibility and effectiveness.

Increased Gambling Risk Among Neurodivergent Individuals

Research indicates that people with conditions such as ADHD or autism are at a higher risk of gambling-related problems. Many neurodivergent individuals may engage with gambling to manage social isolation, establish routines, or cope with stress.

Moreover, characteristics such as impulsivity, hyperfocus, and a preference for structured environments can contribute to problematic gambling behaviours. Consequently, these traits can make individuals more vulnerable to harmful gambling patterns.

Barriers to Accessing Support

Despite these risks, neurodivergent people often encounter substantial obstacles when seeking help. These include limited awareness of specialist treatment services, along with stigma and fear of judgment. As a result, many individuals continue to experience harm without appropriate support or tailored interventions.

New Resources for Therapists and Practitioners

To address these challenges, GambleAware has developed a series of resources in partnership with IFF Research, Ara Recovery for All, and the University of Bristol. These include:

  • Training materials
  • Toolkits
  • Practical case studies

These resources are specifically designed for therapists and practitioners working with clients experiencing both gambling harm and neurodivergence. By providing targeted tools, GambleAware aims to equip professionals to deliver more effective, personalised care.

Six Key Principles for Effective Support

The report identifies six guiding principles for supporting neurodivergent individuals:

  1. Understanding diverse communication needs
  2. Ensuring clarity in all interactions
  3. Promoting client autonomy
  4. Considering sensory sensitivities
  5. Encouraging self-directed strategies and peer networks
  6. Providing comprehensive staff training in neurodiversity awareness

Together, these principles form the foundation for more inclusive and effective treatment pathways.

CEO Comments on the Initiative

GambleAware CEO Anna Hargrave emphasized the importance of the new resources:

“The report highlights the complex link between neurodivergence and gambling. Characteristics such as impulsivity, hyperfocus, social difficulties and a need for stimulation drive gambling behaviour and increase harms. Meanwhile, stigma, shame and lack of tailored support further isolate neurodivergent people and make it harder for them to seek help.”

She continued:

“The resources we have produced support therapists and practitioners working with clients who experience both gambling harms and neurodivergence. They address a critical evidence gap and ensure treatment can be tailored effectively for the best outcomes.”
