Insider Betting Prompts Legal Action
The UK Gambling Commission has charged 15 individuals under the Gambling Act 2005, following a detailed investigation into suspicious bets placed on the timing of the 2024 General Election. The case, launched in June 2024, explored whether certain individuals used confidential information to gain an unfair advantage in betting markets.
Allegations Point to Cheating
According to the Commission, the suspects allegedly violated Section 42 of the Gambling Act, which criminalises cheating in gambling. Notably, the bets were placed shortly before the surprise 22 May 2024 announcement that the election would take place on 4 July. As a result, the timing raised serious concerns about possible insider access.
Furthermore, the list of those charged includes several high-profile figures with political and public sector backgrounds. Among them are former MP Craig Williams and former police officer Jeremy Hunt.
Next Steps in Court
All 15 individuals are expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 13 June 2025. For now, the Gambling Commission has declined to comment further, citing the ongoing legal process.
Wider Regulatory Developments
Importantly, this case remains separate from a previous police investigation, which ended without charges in 2024. Meanwhile, the Commission continues to lead enforcement efforts using its powers under Sections 27 and 28 of the Gambling Act.
