Recognition for Constructive Engagement
Tim Miller, Executive Director of the UK Gambling Commission, addressed the Bingo Association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM, expressing appreciation for the group’s “practical and constructive” efforts. In his speech, Miller highlighted the Bingo Association’s collaborative stance, particularly in its approach to evidence-led decision-making and responsible gambling.
He also praised the association’s seamless cooperation during the implementation phase of the Gambling Act Review. According to Miller, this has positioned the bingo sector as a model for how industry bodies can align with regulatory reform without unnecessary friction.
Commitment to Improving Regulation
Miller touched on the ongoing consultation regarding gaming machine technical standards, noting that although the consultation period has been extended, the Commission remains committed to achieving the right balance between innovation and safety. He reaffirmed the regulator’s intent to enhance the Gambling Survey for Great Britain to ensure a clearer understanding of player behavior across sectors, including bingo.
Crackdown on Illegal Bingo
One area of growing concern is the rise of unlicensed bingo operations. Miller acknowledged recent feedback from the Bingo Association about increased incidents of bingo offered outside the legal framework, often failing to meet even the basic criteria for exempt status.
“Keeping crime out of gambling is one of our core licensing objectives,” he said. “Where we receive sufficient evidence of illegal activity, we will take action. However, there’s a noticeable gap between the concerns raised and the number of reports we receive.”
Cross-Border Cooperation Expands
In addition to domestic efforts, the Gambling Commission recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI), solidifying cooperation between the two regulators. This move comes alongside other enforcement actions, including the charging of 15 individuals last month related to the 2024 general election betting investigation.
