UK Study Links Problem Gambling to Specific Games

Gambling Commission study analyses link between problem gambling and specific verticals

The UK Gambling Commission’s latest report reveals that certain gambling formats carry a higher risk of addiction. This includes online slots, instant-win games, casino products, and non-sports betting. These activities remain risky even after accounting for how often people gamble and their background.

DATA ON UK GAMBLING COMMISSION HIGH-RISK VERTICALS

The research used data from the Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB). It showed that players involved in fast, continuous formats were more likely to score eight or higher on the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI). This score reflects serious gambling-related harm.

In contrast, people who bought National Lottery tickets had a much lower risk. Games like football pools, in-person bingo, and online National Lottery games also showed weaker links to problem gambling.

The study tested 18 legal gambling activities and confirmed earlier findings. While overall gambling involvement matters, some games pose higher risks than others. These results support the need for stronger regulation to reduce harm and protect players.
