Malaysia Police Target AI-Altered Gambling Videos

Malaysia Gambling

The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will investigate any AI-generated gambling videos if such content appears online, according to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain. While no cases involving AI-edited videos have surfaced yet, authorities are urging the public—especially victims—to come forward and file official reports.

So far in 2024, most gambling-related promotions have featured static images, often shared by influencers on social media. However, PDRM remains on alert as the use of artificial intelligence in illegal gambling ads becomes a growing concern worldwide.

Under the ongoing Op Dadu operation, police have opened 28 investigation papers in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Out of these, 18 cases have already gone to court, while 10 remain under investigation.

“We will take action if AI-edited videos promoting gambling emerge. Victims must step forward and report them,” Razarudin said.

From 2021 to 2024, PDRM blocked 3,785 illegal gambling websites. In 2024 alone, officers conducted more than 7,800 raids and arrested over 9,460 suspects linked to gambling operations.

Despite these efforts, enforcement has become more complex. Razarudin highlighted how encrypted messaging platforms and rapid technological advancements make it harder for authorities to gather court-admissible evidence.

He also criticized the outdated Betting Act 1953, which still lacks clear legal definitions for online gambling. This gap, he said, hinders effective prosecution and allows syndicates to exploit legal loopholes.

Razarudin stressed the urgent need for legislative reform that addresses modern gambling practices, especially those involving digital platforms and AI tools. Until then, Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will continue using existing laws to prosecute anyone—whether individuals or syndicates—who engages in illegal online gambling.
