Mexico Betting Transactions Surge 432% During World Cup

Online betting transactions in Mexico surged 431.75% during the 2026 FIFA World Cup compared with the 2022 tournament, according to data from financial technology company STP. The sharp increase highlights the growing role of mobile devices, digital payments and major sporting events in Mexico’s betting market.

World Cup Drives Betting Activity

STP’s internal data showed a significant increase in online betting and gaming transactions during the 2026 World Cup. This trend reinforces the tournament’s importance as a major driver of betting activity in Mexico.

The wider market is also expected to expand. Mordor Intelligence estimates that Mexico’s online gambling market could grow from $0.79 million in 2025 to $1.09 million by 2031. This represents an 8.6% CAGR. Mobile betting already accounts for 63.9% of market activity, underlining the importance of smartphone-based access.

Digital Payments Support Market Growth

The expansion of mobile betting is being supported by wider adoption of smartphones, digital wallets and online payment services. STP said more gaming and betting brands are using its payment infrastructure. This trend reflects increased formalisation and greater consumer access to digital wagering.

Jaime Márquez Poo, STP’s Executive Director of New Business, said the World Cup figures demonstrate growing consumer confidence in digital platforms for betting and the increasing maturity of Mexico’s digital entertainment sector.

However, greater accessibility also creates a stronger need for responsible gambling and consumer protection measures. This is particularly important as mobile platforms make betting easier to access.

Major Sporting Events Attract New Bettors

Research from Ipsos Mexico further highlights the tournament’s influence. Around 40% of surveyed consumers said they were very or somewhat familiar with betting. Meanwhile, 34% of those familiar with the activity had placed bets during football matches.

The 431.75% increase compared with the 2022 World Cup therefore reflects more than a temporary spike in transactions. It also demonstrates how major sporting events can introduce new consumers to digital betting. In addition, these events accelerate adoption of mobile and electronic payment channels across Mexico.
