New Zealand has officially opened the door to online casino regulation. The country invites operators to express their interest in joining a new licensing regime.
Led by the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA), this move forms part of the country’s broader Online Gambling Implementation Programme. It aims to bring offshore gambling activity under New Zealand’s direct regulatory control.
Operators Encouraged to Register Early
Trina Lowry, Programme Director for the initiative, urged operators to get involved as soon as possible.
“For online casino operators interested in entering the New Zealand market, the most important thing you can do is register your interest at the official website,” she emphasized.
By encouraging early participation, the government hopes to shape a regulatory framework that is not only clear and efficient but also responsive to industry needs. Moreover, licensing will occur through a competitive selection process. All applicants must demonstrate compliance with local laws. This includes strong harm minimization protocols.
A Shift Towards Local Oversight and Player Protection
Although many New Zealanders currently gamble on offshore platforms, existing laws prohibit these services from advertising locally. However, the proposed framework would reverse that. Licensed operators will soon gain permission to advertise within New Zealand, representing a major update to the Gambling Act 2003.
In parallel, the government has enhanced its gambling harm prevention strategy. The new plan introduces updated safeguards to protect vulnerable players and ensure responsible gambling.
Next Steps for Interested Operators
The DIA now welcomes operators to register their interest online. Doing so will help shape the future of online gambling in New Zealand. It aims to ensure the market develops with integrity and consumer safety at its core.
By moving toward a licensed, transparent model, New Zealand aims to offer better oversight. They also seek to reduce gambling-related harm and provide players with safer online options.
