Authorities in Vietnam’s Khanh Hoa Province have dismantled a foreign-controlled illegal online gambling operation following a coordinated police crackdown in Nha Trang. The operation, confirmed on December 27, targeted high-tech gambling rings allegedly run by overseas nationals and resulted in multiple arrests and the seizure of a large volume of electronic equipment.
The raid underscores Vietnam’s continued efforts to combat illegal online gambling and cyber-enabled crimes, particularly those involving foreign syndicates operating under the guise of tourism.
Coordinated Night Raids Across Nha Trang
The operation followed an extended period of surveillance by the Criminal Investigation Division of Khanh Hoa Provincial Police. On the evening of December 26, officers launched simultaneous raids at five separate locations across Nha Trang City, including residential properties in the Nha Trang, Nam Nha Trang, and Tay Nha Trang wards.
By acting at the same time, police were able to prevent suspects from destroying digital evidence or alerting accomplices. Inside the properties, officers uncovered fully operational online gambling setups staffed by multiple individuals and supported by extensive digital infrastructure.
Investigators said the sites functioned as concealed gambling hubs rather than traditional offices, allowing the operation to blend into residential neighborhoods.
Use of Tourist Visas to Evade Detection
Preliminary findings indicate that most of the suspects entered Vietnam on tourist visas, a tactic commonly used to bypass work permit requirements and regulatory scrutiny. After arrival, the group rented private homes, which were converted into bases for operating online betting platforms.
Authorities noted that many of the foreign nationals failed to register their place of residence with local police, a legal requirement in Vietnam. This violation raised suspicions and ultimately helped law enforcement identify the illegal activities.
By operating from private residences instead of commercial spaces, the group appears to have attempted to avoid attention while embedding itself within local communities.
Large-Scale Digital Infrastructure Seized
The scale of the gambling network became evident during the searches. Police seized dozens of electronic devices actively connected to online gambling platforms at the time of the raids. Investigators believe the equipment was used not only to manage betting activity but also to promote gambling services through social media channels.
In total, officers confiscated 40 laptops and 112 mobile phones. These devices will undergo forensic examination to determine transaction volumes, user activity, and the full reach of the gambling network.
Authorities expect the digital evidence to play a central role in mapping the organization’s operations and identifying potential offshore connections.
Dozens Detained as Investigation Continues
Following the raids, police detained 31 individuals for questioning, including 30 Chinese nationals and one Vietnamese citizen. Investigators are examining whether the local suspect played a supporting role in facilitating housing, logistics, or communications for the foreign-run operation.
Police have not ruled out further arrests, noting that the investigation remains ongoing. Officials also said the swift dismantling of the gambling ring sends a strong warning that Vietnam will not tolerate the use of its territory for cross-border cybercrime and illegal online gambling activities.
