Thai Cabinet Unlikely to Approve High Bank Deposit Requirement for Casino Entry, Says Deputy PM

Thailand’s Cabinet is unlikely to approve a proposal requiring locals to have at least THB 50 million (US$1.5 million) in their bank accounts to enter casinos, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

Speaking to The Bangkok Post, Anutin stated that the measure faces slim chances of approval, as it does not effectively address concerns about illegal gambling or Thai citizens frequenting casinos in neighboring countries. He reiterated that his Bhumjaithai Party, as part of the ruling coalition, supports policies that do not negatively impact society.

The proposal, introduced by the Council of State, aims to restrict casino access to individuals with substantial financial means. However, international investors have expressed concerns, as the rule would largely limit Thai casinos to foreign visitors.

The revised entertainment complex bill is currently in its second round of public consultation and will require further cabinet approval before moving forward. Anutin confirmed that the proposed entry requirement will be discussed at an upcoming cabinet meeting.
