Vietnam-Laos Crack Down on Illegal Gambling Network

Illegal Gambling Network

In a major crackdown on illegal online betting, Vietnamese and Laotian authorities have jointly dismantled a cross-border gambling network accused of facilitating nearly VND1.3 trillion (approximately $50 million) in bets. The operation, led by Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security, was first reported by VnExpress.

Massive Raids Target Gambling Hubs in Laos

The coordinated effort culminated in multiple raids on May 19 in Vientiane, Laos. There, police uncovered foreign-hosted gambling websites operated by a network of Vietnamese nationals. These platforms reportedly featured sophisticated setups—including live broadcasts and social media marketing campaigns—to attract thousands of users.

Key Figures Behind the Gambling Network Operation

At the core of this illegal enterprise is Mai Anh Viet, 44, from Hanoi. Authorities believe he partnered with 41-year-old Nguyen Huu Son from Ho Chi Minh City to oversee the entire network. Together, they allegedly dispatched Vietnamese citizens to Laos, assigning relatives to manage online gambling operations in rotating shifts.

Evidence Seized and Gambling Network Suspects Apprehended

During the raids, Laotian police confiscated a trove of digital equipment: 35 mobile phones, 12 desktop computers, and 25 laptops. Authorities also arrested 29 Vietnamese suspects. All individuals, along with the seized items, were later transferred to Vietnam for further investigation.

Ongoing Investigation Expands in Vietnam

Following the Laos operation, Vietnamese investigators launched additional searches at home. They discovered even more equipment used to operate and promote the illegal platforms. Authorities also uncovered detailed records tracking user activity and financial transactions linked to international gambling operators.

Charges Filed Against 31 Individuals

So far, prosecutors have charged 31 people in connection with the case. Among them, 27 face charges for organizing gambling activities, while four are accused of participating in illegal betting. The investigation is still ongoing, with authorities continuing to pursue all leads.

Vietnam’s Tough Stance on Online Gambling

It’s important to note that online gambling remains illegal in Vietnam. The government has made cybercrime enforcement a top priority—especially when it comes to foreign-based betting platforms targeting Vietnamese users.
