WHO Declares Myanmar Earthquake a Top Emergency, Calls for $8 Million in Aid

Myanmar Earthquake

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the recent earthquake in Myanmar a top-level emergency. It is asking for $8 million to provide medical help and stop the spread of diseases over the next 30 days.

The earthquake has killed over 1,700 people in Myanmar and Thailand, injured 3,400, and left more than 300 missing. WHO says Myanmar’s weak healthcare system puts many injured people at risk of infection. Diseases like cholera and dengue could also spread after the disaster. WHO has already started sending medicine and supplies, and plans to send medical teams to the affected areas.

Other countries are also helping. China is giving 100 million yuan in emergency aid and has sent two rescue teams with tents, blankets, and first aid kits. U.S. President Donald Trump said the U.S. will also support Myanmar. The United Nations has activated emergency plans to help as well.

The first batch of emergency supplies has arrived in Naypyidaw, and more are on the way to hard-hit areas like Mandalay. WHO is working with other groups to get help to people quickly.

WHO says the most important things now are saving lives and stopping disease outbreaks. It is calling on the world to come together and help Myanmar through this difficult time.
