YouTube Policy Puts Poker Creators at Risk of Losing Audience

Youtube gambling

Creators in the poker community are sounding alarms over YouTube’s latest gambling content policy, arguing that poker deserves separate treatment from games of pure chance like online slots.

Policy Change Sparks Concerns

In March, Google rolled out new rules for gambling-related videos on YouTube. The update banned links to unlicensed gambling sites and added stricter age restrictions. For poker creators, the impact has been immediate and severe.

Veteran creator Kevin Martin, known online as KMart, revealed on X that his videos now carry an automatic age restriction for viewers under 18. While his audience was already 99.8% adult, the new rule forces even adult viewers to log in before watching. Martin believes this extra step reduces viewer numbers, lowers engagement, and prevents videos from reaching YouTube’s recommendation algorithm.

“Poker content feels cooked,” Martin said, warning that the change could spell the end for many creators in the space.

Blanket Rules Hit Skill-Based Games

Many in the poker community acknowledge the importance of protecting minors from gambling-related content, especially in verticals like online slots. However, they argue that YouTube’s one-size-fits-all policy unfairly penalizes poker, which requires strategy and skill.

PokerListings reported in April that multiple creators saw their videos demonetized, blocked, or age-gated soon after the policy change. They claim this goes beyond YouTube’s stated intent, removing the distinction between skill-based games and those based purely on chance.

Educational Value at Risk

Poker creators have long relied on YouTube to share strategy discussions, tournament breakdowns, and analysis. A July article by Nimra Maqsood on Medium noted that the platform now demands higher “added value” content, such as in-depth commentary, to stay compliant.

The shift comes as other reports, including one from Fast Company in March, questioned why poker videos faced heavy restrictions while some online casino content appeared to bypass enforcement. For creators, the concern is clear: without visibility, poker education and entertainment on YouTube could vanish.
