South Korea’s Korea Sports Leisure Co. Ltd. has introduced a new reward-based reporting system aimed at strengthening enforcement against illegal sports betting operations. The system offers payouts of up to KRW200 million ($135,000) for verified cases. This highlights the priority of combating these crimes in Korea.
The initiative, run through its Illegal Sports Toto Reporting Center, allows the public to report unlawful gambling activity via an online portal or phone hotline. Reports can cover illegal betting websites, operators, users, and individuals involved in promoting or facilitating such activities across Korea.
Tiered Reward System for Reports
The scheme offers structured financial incentives depending on the severity and category of the violation. This demonstrates the country systematic approach to curbing illegal gambling operations:
- Up to KRW200 million ($135,000) for reports on illegal gambling operators
- Up to KRW50 million ($33,500) for match-fixing related to Sports Toto events
- Up to KRW15 million ($10,000) for promoting, brokering, or supporting illegal betting activity
For illegal gambling websites, smaller rewards are available per verified case. There are stricter verification requirements, including URLs, login details, and supporting evidence specific to activities in Korea.
Focus on Fast-Moving Illegal Platforms
Authorities noted that rewards may go only to the first valid report of a duplicated or rapidly cloned website. This highlights the challenge of tackling operators that frequently change domains to evade enforcement in Korea.
Additional reporting channels include suspicious bank accounts linked to illegal gambling networks. There are fixed rewards of KRW100,000 ($67) per confirmed case across Korea.
Strengthening Public Participation in Enforcement
Korea Sports Leisure designed the system to embed public participation into enforcement efforts and help authorities identify and disrupt illegal betting networks more effectively. Additionally, officials emphasized that citizen reporting serves as a key tool in reducing the scale and impact of unregulated gambling activity in South Korea. This directly impacts Korea’s efforts to ensure integrity in the industry.
