Italy Blocks Polymarket as Europe Tightens Crackdown

Italy has become the latest European country to block Polymarket, as regulators continue tightening scrutiny of prediction market platforms across the region.

The Italian Customs and Monopolies Agency (ADM) has added the cryptocurrency-based prediction platform to its blacklist of unauthorized gambling websites, grouping it with illegal offshore betting operators.

ADM Renews Action Against Polymarket

The move marks the second time Italy has blocked Polymarket. The platform was previously blacklisted in late 2025 before being temporarily reinstated during legal proceedings.

Under the latest decision, the ADM has also referred the matter to the Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office, potentially opening the way for criminal proceedings.

Stefano Tino, Managing Director of Betsson’s Southern Europe division, welcomed the decision, saying regulated markets must apply the same rules to all operators.

European Pressure Builds

Italy joins a growing list of European jurisdictions taking action against prediction market platforms.

Polymarket has already faced restrictions in France, Belgium, Spain, and the Netherlands, while Germany is investigating ADI Predictstreet, FIFA’s prediction market partner.

Last month, regulators from nine European countries launched a joint initiative warning consumers about the risks posed by unlicensed prediction markets, citing concerns over consumer protection and market integrity.

Sponsorship Faces New Questions

The decision also creates uncertainty for Serie A club SS Lazio, which signed Polymarket as its main shirt sponsor in 2026 under a multi-year agreement.

With Italian law prohibiting the promotion of unlicensed betting operators, the renewed blacklist could raise legal questions surrounding the partnership as regulatory pressure on prediction markets continues to grow across Europe.
