Ygam Launches New Gaming & Esports Programme for Safer Play

Ygam New Gaming & Esports

Educating the Next Generation of Gamers and Parents

The Young Gamers and Gamblers Education Trust (Ygam) has introduced a new Gaming & Esports Programme aimed at helping young players and their parents understand the risks and responsibilities that come with modern gaming.

With data showing that 80% of 16–24-year-olds played video games in 2024—and 83% of them played online—Ygam is stepping in to address knowledge gaps around microtransactions, game mechanics, and the realities of esports careers.

A Timely Response to a Growing Market

Ygam’s initiative comes as the global esports market is projected to reach $10.91 billion by 2032. This growth, while exciting, brings complex challenges for younger audiences and their families. The charity believes that improved education around digital safety and gaming culture is essential.

Sacha Kent, Programme Lead for Gaming & Esports, emphasized the urgency:

“Gaming is central to children’s digital lives. Our goal is to equip them with the tools and knowledge to enjoy gaming safely and responsibly.”

Focus on Inclusion and Digital Safeguarding

Beyond gameplay risks, the programme also addresses online toxicity and inclusivity—key concerns in today’s gaming spaces. Ygam wants to foster healthier environments by encouraging conversations about digital behavior from an early age.

Charlotte Nichols MP, Chair of the APPG for Video Gaming and Esports, praised the charity’s work:

“Video games bring many benefits but also risks. Ygam plays a vital role in highlighting these issues and driving solutions.”

Early Impact and Broader Support

The programme has already reached over 100 participants and will expand through open sessions in April and May. University voices like Lia Thompson, President of Sheffield Hallam’s Gaming & Esports Society, also support the initiative:

“Ygam’s training helps us challenge toxic behavior and reshape online communities for the better.”

Looking Ahead

This initiative is one of the final major moves by Jane Ribye, Ygam’s CEO, who plans to step down by the end of June. As Ygam continues to grow its reach, the Gaming & Esports Programme could shape a safer future for players of all ages.
