Crackdown on Unlawful Online Gambling Continues
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) is stepping up its fight against illegal gambling by directing internet service providers (ISPs) to block several new websites. These sites, including Casino Australia Online, Pokies.bet, Pokiesman, and Smart Pokies, were found to be operating unlawfully under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001.
A Broader Strategy to Protect Consumers
Website blocking plays a key role in ACMA’s larger enforcement strategy to shield Australians from illegal gambling activities. The authority actively targets services offering prohibited interactive gambling, such as online casinos, slot machines, and in-play sports betting.
It also cracks down on platforms that lack a valid Australian license but still offer regulated gambling services or promote unlicensed operators through advertising.
Over 1,000 Sites Already Blocked
Since issuing its first blocking request in November 2019, ACMA has successfully blocked 1,026 illegal gambling and affiliate websites. Its ongoing enforcement has driven more than 220 illegal operators out of the Australian market.
Warning for Consumers
ACMA continues to warn users that even if a gambling service appears legitimate, it likely lacks the consumer protections offered by licensed operators. Using these unregulated platforms poses serious risks, including unfair practices and lack of dispute resolution.
