Anutin Charnvirakul Elected Prime Minister of Thailand

Anutin Charnvirakul, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, has been elected Prime Minister of Thailand after securing over 63 percent of the parliamentary vote. His tally more than doubled that of rival Chaikasem Nitisiri, marking a decisive defeat for the Pheu Thai Party, historically tied to the Shinawatra family.

Political Deadlock Resolved

The vote ended days of political deadlock after the collapse of Thailand’s coalition government. By positioning his party between rival blocs, Anutin built cross-parliamentary support and emerged as the consensus candidate. His election reshapes Thailand’s political landscape and reaffirms his role as a skilled political mediator.

Policy Scrutiny and Casino Debate

Despite his earlier opposition to casino development, Anutin’s stance on Thailand’s casino bill remains under close watch. As Deputy Prime Minister, he had emphasized that any entertainment complex policies must align with legal and moral standards while boosting the economy. He also clarified that internal party disagreements over casino legalization did not represent Bhumjaithai’s official position.

Chief Government Whip Wisut Chainarun, however, has urged Anutin to present a clear, unified stance on the proposed entertainment complex initiative, underscoring the pressure he faces early in his term.

Reform Commitments

Anutin’s success was strengthened by an agreement with the opposition People’s Party, the largest bloc in parliament. In return for their backing, he pledged to hold a referendum on constitutional reform and call a general election within four months.

“I will work my hardest, every day, no holidays, because there is not a lot of time. We have to ease problems quickly,” Anutin declared after his victory.

With reform promises, coalition bargaining, and policy challenges ahead, Anutin’s premiership begins under both opportunity and scrutiny.
