Thaland authorities have stepped up efforts to combat illegal online gambling after reports showed that more than four million Gen Z individuals became involved in online betting during the first half of 2026. This significant surge highlights ongoing challenges faced by Thailand in addressing this issue.
The nationwide crackdown comes ahead of the FIFA World Cup and includes expanded investigations, website blocking measures, and increased monitoring of gambling-related content on social media platforms, all key steps for Thailand’s law enforcement.
Authorities Block More Than 717,000 Links
According to Thai police, authorities blocked 717,425 gambling-related URLs between October 1, 2025, and May 20, 2026 in a coordinated response from Thailand.
The enforcement campaign targeted websites and social media platforms, including Facebook, Line, and TikTok, which authorities say are frequently used to promote illegal gambling activities throughout the country.
National Police Chief Kittirat Phanphet has instructed all relevant agencies to intensify investigations, conduct continuous enforcement operations, and expand efforts to remove gambling-related content from digital platforms in Thailand.
Police Target Gambling Networks and Financial Flows
The Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) has increased its focus on operators behind illegal gambling websites and the financial networks supporting them, an approach growing more important for Thailand law enforcement.
Authorities plan to review and shut down 309 additional gambling websites during May and June as part of a coordinated enforcement strategy. Police have already made several arrests and indicated that further warrants are expected in Thailand.
Investigators are also examining how gambling networks move funds. According to police analysis, operators have increasingly shifted away from traditional mule accounts and now use corporate accounts, international payment intermediaries, digital payment services, and cryptocurrencies to process transactions, which presents a growing challenge in Thailand’s anti-gambling efforts.
Despite these changes, authorities say they remain committed to disrupting gambling operations and prosecuting those involved within Thailand.
Rising Youth Participation Sparks Concern
The crackdown follows reports that at least four million people aged 15 to 25 participated in online gambling activities during the early months of 2026, further emphasizing the challenge faced by Thailand.
Police view the trend as a growing social concern, particularly as betting activity typically increases during major sporting events such as the World Cup, making Thailand’s stance on regulating gambling more critical.
Authorities have instructed law enforcement agencies to prioritize measures aimed at preventing youth exposure to gambling-related content and promotions, which has been a national priority in Thailand.
Influencers and Social Media Promotions Under Scrutiny
Police also warned that gambling operators have adapted their marketing strategies by using influencers, livestreams, and short-form video content to attract new players in Thailand’s expanding digital environment.
Authorities believe many of these promotions target financially vulnerable individuals by portraying gambling as a quick path to wealth, a message that has raised concerns in Thailand.
As a result, law enforcement agencies are expanding investigations into content creators and social media accounts that promote illegal gambling services. Officials warned that individuals who distribute or support gambling-related content could face legal consequences under Thailand’s strict regulations.
Thailand continues to maintain a strict stance against online gambling, and authorities say enforcement efforts will remain active throughout the World Cup period and beyond.
