A senator in Argentina’s Province of Buenos Aires has introduced legislation aimed at significantly restricting the presence of online gambling advertising within sports and community environments. The bill was proposed by Malena Galmarini of the Fuerza Patria party. It seeks to ban sponsorships, branding, and promotional visibility for gambling operators in spaces heavily frequented by children, teenagers, and families.
Proposed Restrictions Cover Clubs, Stadiums, and Community Facilities
Under the proposed framework, authorities would prohibit online gambling branding and sponsorship within a 100-meter radius of sports clubs, stadiums, and community facilities throughout the province. This includes:
- Billboards and outdoor signage promoting gambling operators
- Venue naming rights linked to betting brands
- Gambling logos or trademarks displayed on sports jerseys or athletic apparel
- Other visible sponsorship materials associated with betting companies
The measure would apply across municipal sports centers, amateur and professional football venues, and a broad range of community sports spaces.
Focus on Youth Protection and Social Responsibility
Galmarini stated that the proposal does not seek to eliminate gambling as an industry, but instead aims to shield particularly sensitive community spaces from betting promotion. Additionally, the bill frames sports institutions as social spaces that serve the common good. It also emphasizes concerns that gambling normalization through football and sports marketing may increase problematic gambling behaviours among younger audiences.
According to the proposal, professional football currently acts as a major channel for embedding betting brands into daily life. Therefore, regulatory intervention is considered necessary.
Provincial Enforcement and Regulatory Oversight
If passed, enforcement would be led by the provincial Undersecretariat of Sports in coordination with sports facilities, consumer protection authorities, and child welfare agencies. At the same time, municipal governments would oversee local compliance. The Provincial Institute of Lotteries and Casinos would provide technical assistance in identifying gambling operators subject to restrictions.
For more severe violations, provincial authorities could suspend or revoke licences and permits tied to gambling-related advertising activities.
Part of Broader National Push for Gambling Advertising Reform
The Buenos Aires proposal reflects growing momentum across Argentina toward tighter gambling advertising regulation. National lawmakers are increasingly focusing on reducing youth exposure to betting promotion, particularly through football, social media, and influencer-driven campaigns.
Recent federal proposals have similarly targeted restrictions on gambling advertisements appearing on sports shirts, stadiums, club media channels, and locations near schools or youth-oriented spaces.
Argentina Signals Stricter Future for Gambling Marketing
The latest legislative efforts suggest that Argentina may be moving toward a much stricter framework for gambling promotion, mirroring broader global concerns around responsible gambling, youth protection, and the role of sports in normalizing betting culture. If enacted, Buenos Aires’ bill could become a significant regional precedent for gambling advertising regulation within Latin America.
