Cambodia is preparing to roll out a visa-free pilot program for Chinese nationals starting in mid-June 2026. The initiative aims to boost tourism and strengthen travel ties between the two nations.
Pilot Program Details
Starting June 15th until October 15th, 2026, Chinese travelers can visit Cambodia without applying for a visa. Instead, they only need to complete an electronic arrival card, making the entry process significantly faster and more convenient.
Additionally, the government will allow multiple entries during the four-month trial period, offering more flexibility for visitors.
Rising Travel Interest After the Announcement
Right after the announcement, interest from Chinese travelers surged. Major Chinese travel platforms reported a sharp increase in searches for Cambodian destinations, especially Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.
This rise suggests strong travel demand and highlights the effectiveness of Cambodia’s strategy.
Tourism Boost Amid Regional Tensions
Cambodia hopes this initiative will revitalize its tourism sector, which has struggled due to tensions with Thailand. Meanwhile, Thailand has strengthened its own ties with China by dropping its casino legislation plans, adding more competitive pressure in the region.
Despite these challenges, Cambodia still attracted around 1 million Chinese visitors in the first 10 months of the year, according to official data. The new visa-free policy aims to push these numbers even higher.
A Strategic Move for 2026
Overall, Cambodia’s visa-free pilot program marks a major step toward rejuvenating its tourism industry. With easier entry procedures, growing traveler interest, and strategic timing, the country is positioning itself for a strong tourism rebound in 2026.
