Catholic Bishops and Opposition Unite Against Thai Gambling Bill

Thailand Gambling

Religious and Political Opposition Intensifies

In a rare show of unity, Catholic bishops in Thailand have joined forces with opposition parties to urge the government to scrap a controversial bill that would legalize gambling. Although the proposed legislation aims to boost tourism and attract investment, it has triggered widespread backlash—especially from religious leaders in the predominantly Buddhist nation.

Revised Bill Sparks Public Concern

In March, the Thai cabinet approved a revised version of the Integrated Entertainment Business Act, which seeks to legalize gambling and develop casino resorts. Initially, the bill was scheduled for parliamentary debate and a vote on April 9. However, following growing public criticism, the government has postponed the vote indefinitely.

Catholic Church Issues Strong Statement

On April 3, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Thailand (CBCT) released a firm statement condemning the bill. Led by Archbishop Francis Xavier Vira Arpondratana of Bangkok, the bishops warned that legalized gambling could severely harm the moral fabric of Thai society.

“The Church has a mission to act as a moral compass for humanity,” the Archbishop stressed.

Serious Social Risks Highlighted

Furthermore, the bishops cautioned that gambling legalization could fuel addiction, debt, crime, money laundering, human trafficking, and negatively impact youth. They emphasized that economic growth must be pursued in tandem with moral responsibility and the overall well-being of citizens.

Urgent Call for Ethical Governance

“We urge the government to seek balanced, sustainable development that aligns with ethical values,” the CBCT declared. They called on lawmakers to only pass laws that protect human dignity and serve the public good.

Protests and Regional Comparison

Although gambling is banned under Thailand’s 1935 law, illegal betting thrives. Legalization would mirror models in Cambodia, Laos, and Singapore. Meanwhile, pro-democracy leader Jatuporn Prompan urged citizens to protest on April 9, warning the law could weaken national values.
