As calls to ban online gambling grow louder in the Philippines, DigiPlus Interactive Corp—one of the nation’s leading online gaming operators—is urging lawmakers to take a more measured approach.
A Call for Smart Regulation
Chairman Eusebio Tanco emphasized the need for balanced oversight rather than outright prohibition.
“Regulation is the path to player protection,” Tanco stated. “It’s the only way to safeguard players, preserve jobs, and shut out illegal, underground platforms that operate without any oversight.”
According to the company, a smart and well-balanced regulatory framework will not only protect users but also maintain industry accountability and ensure the continued economic value of legal online gaming.
New Safeguards and Community Engagement
In response to concerns, DigiPlus has pledged to enhance its player protection tools. This July, it plans to launch in-app community spaces to promote responsible gambling dialogue and peer support among users.
Furthermore, the company has revamped its platforms to make responsible gaming content more visible—not as a footnote, but as an integral part of the user experience.
Warning Against Unintended Consequences
While several legislators push for bans targeting parts—or all—of the online gambling sector, DigiPlus warns of potential backlash.
“Policymakers must weigh the consequences of a total ban,” the company stressed. “Banning licensed platforms doesn’t eliminate demand. It just pushes users to unregulated black markets where there are no protections, taxes, or oversight.”
Supporting Jobs and Revenue
DigiPlus also noted the broader economic impact of a well-regulated online gaming industry. A healthy, legal sector supports more than 40,000 jobs across marketing, tech, customer service, entertainment, and compliance.
In contrast, shutting down legal operators would put thousands of Filipinos out of work while eliminating billions in potential government revenue.
Looking Ahead
As the debate over online gaming regulation continues, DigiPlus positions itself as a key stakeholder advocating for responsible growth, player safety, and sustained economic contribution.
