GambleAware Plans Closure Ahead of UK Reform Shift

GambleAware has announced it will begin a managed closure process, aiming to wind down operations by 31 March 2026. The move aligns with the UK government’s shift toward a statutory model for tackling gambling harms across England, Scotland, and Wales.

Until the transition is complete, GambleAware’s website and prevention tools will remain accessible.

Transition to Government-Led Model

Chair of Trustees Andy Boucher confirmed that responsibilities will pass to public bodies following the introduction of the statutory levy and the appointment of three new commissioners overseeing research, prevention, and treatment.

“Our main priority remains protecting people from gambling harm,” said Boucher. “We’re focused on ensuring a smooth handover that maintains support and continuity for those in need.”

Baroness Twycross, Minister for Gambling, acknowledged the vital role of third sector organisations like GambleAware. She praised their long-standing efforts in delivering frontline services and national prevention initiatives.

Ongoing Support and Innovation

As part of its continued support, GambleAware recently launched a self-help mobile app to address rising demand, particularly among younger users. The app offers anonymous, evidence-based tools for those seeking help with gambling-related issues.

The statutory model will officially begin from April 2026, marking a new phase in the UK’s approach to gambling reform.
