Online Gambling Left Out of Philippine President’s SONA

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. avoided the topic of online gambling during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, despite speculation that he would weigh in on growing calls for a ban.

In his 70-minute speech, delivered primarily in Tagalog, Marcos focused on infrastructure, healthcare, national security, and foreign investment. He also emphasized a renewed anti-corruption push and called for strict alignment between the 2026 national budget and government spending plans.

However, he made no mention of the gaming industry—an absence many observers found significant. Last year’s SONA included a major announcement to close all Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs), even those operating legally.

Analysts had expected Marcos to clarify the government’s stance on whether to shut down online gambling entirely or introduce higher taxes and stricter regulation. But the president remained silent on the matter.

Opponents of a ban argue that prohibition would push bettors toward unregulated markets, making enforcement harder and reducing government revenue. Meanwhile, supporters of the industry warn that further tax increases could cripple legitimate operators and drive users to illegal platforms.

While Marcos did not address online gaming in his speech, he has previously signaled interest in further reviewing the sector. Lawmakers continue to keep the issue in the public eye, suggesting the debate is far from over.
