Philippines Targets Illegal Online Gaming, Rules Out Total Ban

Philippine

The Philippine government has ruled out a total ban on online gaming but continues to intensify efforts to dismantle illegal gaming websites.

During a Malacañang press briefing on Thursday, the Presidential Palace confirmed that two agencies—the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT)—are actively cracking down on unauthorized gaming sites. So far, the DICT has taken down approximately 7,000 illegal websites flagged by PAGCOR.

However, authorities admit that enforcement remains a challenge. “Once we shut them down, they quickly create new sites,” said the Palace spokesperson, highlighting the agility of operators behind illegal platforms.

When questioned about a potential nationwide ban on online games—such as the popular title Scatter—the spokesperson clarified that a total restriction is not on the table. Legal online games, licensed and monitored by PAGCOR, will continue to operate under strict regulatory oversight.

“These are controlled and monitored activities,” the official explained, emphasizing that PAGCOR-accredited platforms differ significantly from unregulated counterparts.

Concerns Grow Over Gaming Addiction

Despite this stance, the government remains concerned about rising cases of online gaming addiction. Authorities acknowledged that more Filipinos are spending extended hours on online platforms, which may have adverse effects on mental health and productivity.

Going forward, the government plans to strengthen public awareness campaigns and encourage responsible gaming practices while continuing its crackdown on illegal sites.
