Sri Lanka is positioning its gaming industry as a key driver of tourism growth and regional investment, according to remarks by Deputy Tourism Minister Ruwan Ranasinghe reported by EconomyNext.
Speaking at the Global Game Connect (GGC) 2026 summit in Colombo, Ranasinghe said the government plans to develop the capital into a regional hub for gaming technology and investment, supported by international industry partners, including companies from China.
Colombo Positioned as a Gaming Innovation Hub
The two-day summit took place at Cinnamon Life, part of the City of Dreams Sri Lanka. During the opening session, Ranasinghe emphasized the government’s goal of creating a regulatory and technological environment that encourages gaming innovation and investment.
Sri Lanka’s gaming sector has gradually evolved from small-scale casino clubs into a growing component of the country’s tourism strategy. Authorities believe expanding the sector can attract high-value visitors and international investors.
Strategic Location Near India
Officials also highlighted Sri Lanka’s geographic proximity to India, one of the fastest-growing gaming markets in the region. The government sees Colombo as a potential platform for companies targeting the broader South Asian market, particularly Indian players and tourists.
Integrated Resorts Driving Growth
A major milestone for the sector was the 2025 opening of the $1.2 billion City of Dreams Sri Lanka, which has helped position the island as a potential destination for affluent South Asian travelers.
The government expects the expanding gaming industry to support broader tourism targets, including:
- 3 million international visitors by 2026
- Approximately $250 million in annual gaming revenue
- Increased tax contributions following a recent tax rate adjustment to 18%
Authorities believe that industry events, such as the Global Game Connect summit, can further promote Colombo as a destination for both tourism and business investment while strengthening Sri Lanka’s presence in the regional gaming ecosystem.
