Thailand Illegal Gambling

Major Operation Targets Platform Near Bangkok

As Thailand weighs the future of legalized gambling, authorities are intensifying efforts to dismantle illicit online operations. On Wednesday, police raided an illegal gambling site, Auto888vip.com, seizing assets worth over THB56 million ($1.73 million) in Pathum Thani, just north of Bangkok.

Acting on a tip, officers stormed a house in the Khlong Luang area. There, they arrested a 30-year-old suspect believed to be responsible for managing the platform’s financial transactions. He allegedly oversaw both player withdrawals and the handling of gambling proceeds.

Seized Assets Reveal the Scale of Operation

During the raid, police confiscated:

  • THB28 million ($865,000) in cash
  • Luxury watches and designer goods
  • Two high-end vehicles
  • Titles to the house and land, which were also frozen

Authorities revealed that Auto888vip.com averaged 3,000 active users monthly and processed approximately THB20 million ($618,000) in cash withdrawals each month over the past six months.

Investigation Ongoing as Authorities Eye More Arrests

While the initial arrest marks a major step, the investigation is far from over. Police expect to identify and apprehend other individuals connected to the platform.

This crackdown aligns with Thailand’s broader efforts to rein in illegal online gambling. Last year, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society formed a national committee to modernize gambling laws and align them with the Cybersecurity Act.

A Billion-Dollar Underground Market

Thailand’s illegal gambling industry remains vast and lucrative. Estimates suggest the underground gambling economy is worth THB1.1 trillion ($30.9 billion) annually. Despite growing discussions around legalization, enforcement efforts remain aggressive in curbing unlicensed operations.
