Thailand Declares Poker a Sport to Boost Tourism

Thailand’s Sports Authority (SAT) has officially declared poker a sport, aiming to attract international tournaments and boost sports tourism, according to local media.

Deputy Prime Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit chaired the SAT board meeting where the decision was made. Tourism and Sports Minister Surawong Thienthong, SAT Governor Kongsak Yodmanee, and other senior officials also attended. The board granted sporting status to American football as well.

Poker Rebranded as a Mind Sport

SAT emphasized that while poker is often linked to gambling, it recognizes the game strictly as a mind sport. Officials highlighted poker’s reliance on strategic thinking, mental endurance, and analytical skills, placing it in line with other skill-based competitions.

“Poker’s global reach and mental challenge reflect the values of modern sport,” SAT stated.

Thailand Eyes Global Events

Officials believe this recognition will draw players and spectators from around the world. The move aims to stimulate the economy through travel, events, and sponsorships.

“This decision allows athletes to earn income and helps position Thailand as a global sports tourism hub,” said SAT.

However, the agency warned that poker events must focus on sporting merit, not gambling.

American Football Also Gains Sport Status

The board also recognized American football, aligning with global trends. The International Olympic Committee and SportAccord recently acknowledged the sport, and it will debut at the LA 2028 Olympics.

Thailand’s flag football team ranks 5th globally and won gold at the 2014 Asian Beach Games in Phuket, showing strong potential for international success.
