YouTube Implements New Global Restrictions on Online Betting Content

YouTube introduced major updates this Monday, the 17th, applying new global rules to restrict online betting content. The platform aims to strengthen protection for minors by tightening its policies around both gambling and realistic violent gaming content. In Brazil specifically, these changes align with the expectations of the Secretaria de Prêmios e Apostas (SPA) and the advertising rules of Conar, advancing a broader effort to increase safety and responsible promotion.

The biggest shift is the expanded scope of enforcement on gambling. From now on, any video involving games of chance—whether real money or digital goods such as skins or NFTs—faces restrictions if it mentions or links to websites not certified by Google.

This update applies to:

  • Video uploads
  • Livestreams
  • Demonstrations
  • Verbal mentions of non-certified betting services

YouTube explains that these rules respond to the explosive growth of online gambling formats involving virtual items, which are increasingly popular with younger audiences.

Previously, social casinos were viewed more leniently because no actual cash was used. However, under the new policy, age restrictions will automatically apply to such content, regardless of whether real money is involved. Therefore, users under 18 will be prevented from accessing it.

Reinforced Controls on Violent Gaming Content

In addition, YouTube is tightening controls on realistic depictions of human violence in video games. The goal is to reduce exposure to graphic and psychologically intense scenes, especially for teenage viewers.

Creators are encouraged to review their older videos, because the new rules may affect existing content as well. While YouTube will not issue immediate penalties during the transition period, creators are expected to comply proactively to avoid future enforcement.

Curbing the Promotion of Illegal Betting

Furthermore, the platform aims to clamp down on channels that promote illegal betting. Some creators have hosted 24-hour livestreams showcasing offshore and unregulated betting platforms. With the policy update, such content will now face instant age-gating and potential takedowns if violations continue.

According to responsible betting educator Daniel Fortune, this shift enhances the broader regulatory ecosystem. He notes that SPA guidelines already prohibit minors from betting and require strict age controls in advertising. Even so, Fortune emphasizes that education remains essential to reducing gambling-related risks.

Strengthening Responsibility and Prevention

Paag CEO João Fraga stresses the need for betting platforms to implement strong protective systems themselves. In his view, true compliance includes robust responsible gaming tools such as:

  • Self-exclusion features
  • Deposit and spending limits
  • Behavioral monitoring to detect early signs of harm

Meanwhile, Cristiano Costa, psychologist and Chief Knowledge Officer at EBAC, argues that all betting advertising should clearly communicate risk, not entertainment. Just as with alcohol and tobacco, visible warnings about addiction must be included. Ultimately, he believes transparency should guide all financial-risk industries.

Aligning Digital Platforms with Regulatory Evolution

Overall, these new restrictions show how YouTube is adapting to the growing regulatory focus on digital gambling. By targeting illegal betting promotion, strengthening oversight of emerging gambling formats, and reducing exposure to violent gaming, YouTube further establishes its commitment to protecting minors and supporting a safer online environment.
