British Gambling Commission Warn Bookmakers on Cheltenham Suspicious Bets

The British Gambling Commission has reminded on-course bookmakers to stay vigilant during the Cheltenham Festival. In addition, the Commission highlighted the importance of anti-money laundering (AML) measures and reporting suspicious activity.

The four-day event started on March 10, 2026, at Cheltenham Racecourse. It is a major fixture in National Hunt racing and features top-tier races, including the prestigious Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Risks

The Gambling Commission reminded operators that all licensees must implement robust policies and procedures to address money laundering and terrorist financing risks. Under LCCP Condition 12.1.1 – Anti-money laundering, operators are required to remain alert to attempts by customers to gamble illicit funds. Customers may try either to “clean” money or to fund gambling with criminal proceeds.

Licensees must also comply with reporting requirements under LCCP Conditions 15.1.2 and 15.2.1. This ensures that any suspicious activity is promptly reported to the regulator.

Director of Enforcement Comments

John Pierce, the Gambling Commission’s Director of Enforcement, said:

“Cheltenham Festival is an exceptionally busy period, and while the vast majority of on-course betting is entirely legitimate, licensees should ensure their policies, procedures, and controls remain effective. Vigilance is key to preventing counterfeit currency and criminal proceeds from entering the gambling system.”

The regulator’s warning serves as a timely reminder for bookmakers to maintain compliance, protect players, and safeguard the integrity of the betting market. This is especially important during one of the UK’s most high-profile horse racing events.
