Bangladesh is preparing to replace its colonial-era Gambling Act of 1867 with a new legislative framework. The new framework is designed to address modern gambling activities, including online betting and digital gambling platforms.
The government has confirmed that the proposed law is in its final stages of development. It is expected to be presented to parliament during its next session.
Government Targets Online Gambling Growth
Speaking at an event hosted by the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum, Salahuddin Ahmed said the government is moving forward with a modern legal framework. This new framework is capable of addressing the rapid growth of online gambling and cyber-based betting activities.
According to the minister, the existing legislation is no longer adequate for regulating digital gambling services and emerging technologies. He described online gambling as a growing concern that affects young people, the national economy, and public security.
As a result, authorities believe a new legal framework is necessary to strengthen enforcement capabilities. It would also help them respond more effectively to evolving gambling-related risks.
Focus on Digital and Social Challenges
During the discussion, Salahuddin Ahmed also highlighted broader concerns surrounding digital platforms and online activity.
He pointed to the misuse of social media, the spread of misinformation, and the potential impact of harmful online content on family values and public trust. While emphasizing the importance of a free press, he stated that reasonable safeguards may be necessary to protect national interests and social stability.
The minister encouraged media organizations to play a constructive role in supporting public awareness and responsible digital engagement.
Replacing a 159-Year-Old Law
The proposed legislation would replace the Gambling Act of 1867. That law was introduced during British colonial rule and remains the primary legal framework governing gambling activities in Bangladesh.
Government officials view the reform as a necessary step to modernize regulation. It would also address challenges that did not exist when the original law was enacted.
The new legislation is expected to focus on preventing illegal gambling, betting activities, and online wagering. It will also provide authorities with updated legal tools to address technology-driven offenses.
Industry and Media Attention Grows
The announcement came during a forum meeting attended by journalists from print, broadcast, and digital media organizations. The event was chaired by Masudul Hoque, while Syed Abdal Ahmed participated as a special guest.
As Bangladesh moves closer to introducing the legislation, the proposed reforms are expected to attract significant attention. Policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and digital platform operators will be particularly interested.
If approved, the new law would mark one of the most significant updates to Bangladesh’s gambling regulations in more than a century. It would also reflect the government’s efforts to address the growing influence of online betting and digital gambling services.
