Brazil’s Ministry of Finance has ordered the immediate suspension of Pixbet, a sports betting company based in Paraíba. The precautionary measure also requires the cancellation of ongoing bets and the return of wagered funds to users.
Pixbet faces a daily fine of BRL200,000 ($38,512) if it fails to comply with the suspension. Authorities have also ordered the seizure of assets worth up to BRL1.1 billion as part of a separate investigation into the company’s business group.
Pixbet Faces Suspension Over Regulatory Violations
According to the Ministry of Finance’s precautionary measure, Pixbet allegedly failed to meet regulatory requirements for monitoring and supervising betting activities. The regulator also said the company lacked adequate mechanisms to monitor compulsive gambling behavior.
The Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA) said Pixbet failed to provide information that the regulator considered necessary for its oversight activities. The company operates the domains pix.bet.br, ganhei.bet.br, and betdasorte.bet.br.
SPA said it imposed the precautionary measure because of the potential risks to bettors and the regulated betting market.
As a result, authorities ordered the suspension of operations across websites linked to Pixbet. The company can only resume operations after submitting the required information and demonstrating compliance with applicable regulations.
Ongoing Bets Must Be Cancelled
The suspension order also requires Pixbet to cancel all bets that remain in progress. The company must subsequently return the wagered amounts to affected bettors.
If Pixbet fails to comply with the order, the Ministry of Finance can impose a BRL200,000 daily fine.
However, the suspension does not affect Pixbet’s operations in Rio de Janeiro and Paraná, where the company holds local licences.
The Ministry also clarified that the administrative suspension process is separate from Operation Arena, a law enforcement investigation launched on the same day.
Operation Arena Investigates Financial Crimes
Operation Arena involves the federal police, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Ministry of Finance, and the Federal Revenue Service. The investigation examines whether a business group used sports betting activities, offshore companies, and cryptocurrency transactions to conceal the origin and destination of funds.
Federal police officers approached Pixbet owner Ernildo Júnior in Campina Grande on Thursday. Authorities seized the vehicle he was travelling in and his mobile phone while executing a search and seizure warrant.
Pixbet’s defence team told G1 that its lawyers had not received access to the order authorising the operation and said they were “caught by surprise.” The lawyers added that they would comment after reviewing the decision.
Authorities Execute 19 Search Warrants
Authorities executed 19 search and seizure warrants across Paraíba, São Paulo, Sergipe, Rio de Janeiro, and Paraná.
Investigators also obtained orders to lift banking and telecommunications secrecy and to seize assets worth up to BRL1.1 billion.
In Paraíba, authorities searched Pixbet’s headquarters in Campina Grande. They also targeted the home of a person investigators identified as an alleged “front man” for the business group.
The investigation focuses on suspected currency evasion, money laundering, and other crimes against Brazil’s national financial system.
SPA stressed that its administrative proceedings against Pixbet had already begun before Operation Arena. Therefore, the regulatory suspension and the criminal investigation represent separate actions, although both involve concerns surrounding the company’s operations.
The case highlights the increasing regulatory and enforcement scrutiny facing Brazil’s betting market as authorities strengthen oversight of licensed operators and financial activity connected to sports betting.
