Brazil’s CBF Considers Betting Sponsor Cap

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) is considering limiting the number of betting companies that can sponsor the Copa do Brasil during the tournament’s next commercial cycle, according to O Globo.

The proposal would allow betting companies to remain part of the tournament’s commercial structure while limiting each business segment to a single sponsor. The approach could reduce the number of betting brands visible throughout the competition.

CBF Seeks More Sponsor Diversity

Betting has become a significant part of Brazilian football sponsorship in recent years. Betano has held the Copa do Brasil title sponsorship since 2023 and also holds naming rights for the Brasileirão, Brazil’s top domestic football league.

Under the proposed approach, the CBF would seek greater diversity across the Copa do Brasil’s commercial partnerships by bringing in companies from a wider range of industries.

O Globo reported that the federation also wants to prioritise companies with established businesses and the ability to contribute to the competition’s commercial development, rather than focusing solely on maximising sponsorship revenue.

Betting Advertising Faces Greater Scrutiny

The proposal comes as Brazil continues to debate the role of betting advertising in sport.

Authorities and industry groups have introduced tighter requirements around responsible gambling and advertising as the regulated betting market develops.

A limit on betting sponsors could therefore change the visibility of gambling brands during one of Brazil’s major football competitions while keeping the sector within the tournament’s commercial framework.

Higher Media Rights Revenue Creates Flexibility

The CBF’s approach also follows stronger media rights revenues for the Copa do Brasil.

Broadcasting agreements covering the 2027–2030 cycle reportedly exceed R$4 billion, around 80% more than the previous rights cycle. Higher media income gives the federation greater flexibility to diversify its commercial partnerships rather than relying as heavily on sponsorship revenue.

The new cycle will also introduce changes to how the competition operates commercially and how broadcasters present matches.

CBF Takes Direct Commercial Control

From 2027, the CBF plans to manage the Copa do Brasil’s commercial operations directly, following a model it already uses for the Copa América.

The federation will also produce its own match broadcasts, giving it greater control over advertising inventory. This could include branded match clocks, statistics, team line-ups, key-moment graphics and other commercial placements.

The changes may reshape how betting companies engage with the Copa do Brasil, but they would not necessarily remove betting brands from the CBF’s commercial strategy.
