China’s embassy in the Philippines has linked several kidnapping cases involving Chinese nationals to disputes related to online gambling, telecommunications fraud, and financial conflicts.
In a security advisory, the embassy said seven kidnapping cases involving Chinese citizens were reported during the first half of 2026. All of the victims were long-term Chinese residents in the Philippines. Meanwhile, the suspects were also Chinese nationals.
Gambling and Fraud-Related Disputes
According to the embassy, several kidnappings stemmed from online gambling activities, telecom fraud operations, and unpaid debts. Suspects allegedly targeted other victims after making contact through social media or fake employment opportunities.
The embassy also revealed that Chinese and Philippine authorities have jointly arrested and repatriated 56 Chinese nationals involved in criminal activities this year. This total includes four kidnapping suspects.
Multiple Cases Reported
Among the reported incidents, kidnappers abducted a Chinese student in Makati City in June after they lured her to an apartment under the pretense of swimming lessons. Authorities said the suspects restrained her, robbed her, and forced her to apply for online loans before they eventually released her.
In another case, suspects allegedly held a Chinese woman at a casino hotel in Manila while they transferred funds from her bank account. In additional incidents, suspects abducted victims and later released them after their families paid ransoms.
Embassy Issues Safety Warning
The Chinese embassy said it will continue working with Philippine authorities to combat kidnapping and other forms of transnational crime.
It also urged Chinese nationals to avoid involvement in online gambling, telecom fraud, and casino-related disputes, warning that such activities can increase the risk of becoming targets of criminal organizations. The embassy further advised travelers to remain vigilant and to use official transportation services. Travelers should also be cautious when responding to job offers or contacts made through social media.
