DraftKings has announced plans to launch its online sportsbook and casino products in Alberta, pending regulatory approval. The Canadian province prepares to open its regulated online gaming market on July 13. The operator confirmed that eligible residents can now pre-register ahead of the official launch date.
If approved, Alberta would become the second Canadian province where DraftKings offers both mobile sports betting and online casino products. This follows its existing operations in Ontario.
Alberta Would Mark DraftKings’ 34th North American Sports Betting Jurisdiction
The Alberta rollout would also represent a major milestone for DraftKings’ wider North American expansion strategy. The company said Alberta would become its 34th jurisdiction in North America for online sports betting. Additionally, it would be its seventh jurisdiction for online casino products.
Greg Karamitis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Sports at DraftKings, highlighted the strategic importance of the timing. He noted that the expected Alberta launch aligns closely with the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted in North America. He said the expansion would provide Alberta sports fans with new opportunities to engage with DraftKings’ platform during a major global sporting event.
Competition Builds as Caesars Opens Pre-Registration
DraftKings is not the only major operator preparing for Alberta’s regulated market. Caesars Entertainment has also opened pre-registration in the province, signalling early competition as the market approaches launch.
Alberta began accepting iGaming registrations for operators and service providers in January. This established the first formal steps toward a regulated framework.
Responsible Gambling Accreditation Becomes Mandatory
In February, the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) announced a partnership with the Responsible Gambling Council (RGC). This confirmed that RG Check accreditation will become a mandatory requirement for all regulated online gaming sites in the province.
This move reflects Alberta’s effort to embed responsible gambling standards into its market structure from the start. It ensures operators meet recognised player protection benchmarks before launching.
Alberta Market Launch Signals New Growth Opportunity
With the July 13 launch date approaching, Alberta is emerging as one of the most anticipated new regulated iGaming markets in North America. DraftKings’ planned entry positions the operator to capture early market share. This comes as the province transitions into a regulated online sports betting and casino environment.
