Egyptian authorities are preparing a nationwide shutdown of online betting applications, targeting platforms that operate outside the law. New legislation is expected to permanently block illegal gambling apps and introduce tougher penalties for companies promoting betting services.
Crackdown Targets Popular Illegal Apps
Authorities plan to block apps such as 1xBet and similar services that have gained traction in the country. Ahmed Badawy, head of the Communications and IT Committee in Egypt’s House of Representatives, confirmed that once these apps are blocked, they will not be allowed to resume operations. The move aims to halt the uncontrolled spread of illegal digital gambling.
Stricter Legal Framework and Accountability
The proposed law will impose stronger penalties on companies promoting gambling and close previous loopholes that allowed limited enforcement. Platforms will be required to appoint an accredited legal representative in Egypt, who will be held accountable for regulatory breaches.
Ensuring Social Stability Alongside Digital Growth
Badawy emphasized that the measures are not intended to slow digital transformation, but to ensure technology supports public welfare and social stability. Officials view the crackdown as a key step toward creating a safer digital environment while enforcing responsible business practices.
