Eswatini’s gambling operators must now register clients using national identity (ID) documents, as mandated by the Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Affairs. This measure aims to combat underage gambling and encourage responsible gaming across the nation.
The Gaming Board is consulting with operators that have the technology to support this system. It will actively supervise all gaming activities, focusing on preventing underage gambling, managing levies, and addressing addiction and money laundering.
“The ministry urges all emaSwati to protect their children, starting at home. Government cannot monitor everything, so citizens must take responsibility,” the ministry said, according to Times of Eswatini.
Officials highlighted a specific challenge: mobile numbers are often registered under older family members but used by children. As a result, parents are encouraged to supervise device use to prevent unauthorized access to gambling platforms.
Rising Cases of Schoolchildren Gambling
The issue of schoolchildren gambling is increasingly concerning. MP Sifiso Gadlela raised the matter during a recent debate on the ministry’s second-quarter performance report. He warned that children, who rely on mobile devices for study, may be lured into gambling, distracting them from education.
In response, Eswatini is taking concrete steps to regulate online gambling and protect minors. Last month, the House of Assembly passed a motion to create a centralized system for monitoring online operators.
This initiative addresses gaps left by the 2022 Gaming Act, which focused mainly on land-based casinos and lacked online regulation. The motion requires operators to implement age and identity verification, adding critical safeguards for minors.
Parliamentary Oversight and Next Steps
Introduced by MP Charles Ndlovu, the motion also urges Minister Jane Simelane to develop a framework for preventing underage access and supporting individuals dealing with gambling addiction. Parliament requested a timeline for implementation to ensure these measures are enacted promptly.
Through these efforts, Eswatini aims to modernize its gambling oversight, enhance player protection, and foster responsible gaming practices nationwide.
