HKJC Investigates Decline in Local Betting Turnover

The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) is investigating a decline in local betting turnover after wagering fell 11.5% year-on-year at its latest Sha Tin meeting.

The result marked the fifth decline in six fixtures since the 2026/27 racing season began. Local turnover across the 11-race card reached HK$1.359 billion (US$174 million), according to the South China Morning Post.

HKJC Reviews Falling Turnover

HKJC Chief Executive Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges described the trend as a concern and said a team is examining the reasons behind the decline.

The club said its customer base remained broadly similar to the previous year. However, Head of Racing Product Greg Carpenter said average bet sizes had been significantly weaker across the first five meetings.

Engelbrecht-Bresges also raised concerns that the growth of commingled and simulcast racing could be affecting local turnover by spreading customer wagering across a wider range of products.

He said the club needs to maintain sufficient liquidity in local races while continuing to expand its customer base.

Smaller Fields Add Pressure

Field sizes may also have contributed to weaker turnover at the latest meeting.

The Group 3 Celebration Cup attracted nine runners, compared with 14 in the previous edition. Smaller fields can reduce betting interest and the range of available wagering combinations.

HKJC also noted that smaller fields are common early in the racing season, when some trainers hold horses back during periods of hot weather.

Overseas Commingling Drives Growth

The decline in local turnover comes after a strong overall year for HKJC racing.

Racing turnover increased 3.6% to HK$143.3 billion (US$18.4 billion) in the previous financial year, with overseas commingling providing a major source of growth.

The contrasting results highlight the difference between HKJC’s overall betting performance and activity generated specifically by local races.

For the new season, the club is now assessing whether weaker average bet sizes, broader product offerings, field sizes or other factors are contributing to the decline in local wagering.
