Government Targets Unlawful Online Gaming
The Indian government has blocked approximately 300 illegal betting and gambling websites and apps in its latest enforcement effort, intensifying the crackdown on unlawful online gaming activities. This action follows the passage of the 2025 Online Gaming Act, which established stricter regulations for the sector.
Platforms Under Scrutiny
The blocked platforms include online sports betting websites, offshore casinos offering slots and roulette, betting exchanges, and peer-to-peer marketplaces. Satta and matka networks, along with real-money card and casino gaming apps, were also targeted. Many operated without proper authorization and reached Indian users through mirror sites and mobile applications. To date, authorities have blocked roughly 8,400 illegal gambling platforms.
Key Provisions of the Online Gaming Act
The 2025 Online Gaming Act imposes a comprehensive ban on online money games, covering games of chance, games of skill, and hybrid formats involving monetary stakes. The law prohibits operators from advertising, promoting, or facilitating such games, and bars financial institutions from processing related payments.
Promoting Legitimate Gaming Segments
While enforcing the ban on money-based games, the legislation also encourages growth in legitimate sectors like esports and online social gaming. It introduces provisions that promote innovation and responsible digital entertainment, balancing regulation with opportunities for expansion.
