Indonesia Freezes 33,000+ Bank Accounts Linked to Online Gambling

Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (OJK) has frozen more than 33,000 bank accounts suspected of being connected to illegal online gambling. This move comes as the government intensifies its crackdown on so-called “judol” activity.

The regulator said it has blocked 33,252 accounts, up from the previous total of 32,556. This increase came after instructing banks to apply stricter enhanced due diligence (EDD) checks. OJK Chief Executive of Banking Supervision Dian Ediana Rae said the move reflects broader efforts to limit the economic and financial risks linked to illegal betting operations.

Speaking during the OJK’s monthly board meeting press conference in Jakarta, Dian said banks were ordered to identify and freeze accounts flagged for potential gambling-related transactions. He stressed that online gambling poses growing threats to financial system stability.

OJK Steps Up Oversight of Rural Banks

Alongside its enforcement against illegal gambling flows, OJK has also tightened supervision of the banking sector. The regulator revoked the licenses of six rural banks (BPRs) between January and March 2026. This move is part of its consumer protection and regulatory mandate.

Among those affected were PT BPR Koperindo Jaya in Central Jakarta and PT BPR Pembangunan Nagari in Agam Regency, West Sumatra. OJK said it continues to coordinate with Indonesia’s deposit insurance agency, the Lembaga Penjamin Simpanan (LPS). This is to manage issues involving rural and sharia rural banks in line with Law No. 4 of 2023 on financial sector strengthening.

Financial System Integrity Remains Priority

Dian added that protecting Indonesia’s financial system requires ongoing cooperation between the regulator and key national institutions. These include the Financial System Stability Committee (KSSK), the government, parliament, law enforcement bodies, and other stakeholders. At the same time, authorities continue to expand enforcement measures against illegal online gambling networks.
