Myanmar authorities have outlined a comprehensive strategy to combat online gambling and telecom fraud. They are highlighting cross-border cooperation with Thailand and China. Officials provided updates during a press briefing. The briefing featured senior representatives from the State Administrative Council and the Myanmar Police Force.
Response to Minletpan Incident
Maj Gen Zaw Min Tun addressed public concerns following the Minletpan incident. According to him, the Karen National Union (KNU) allegedly attempted to divert attention from previous online fraud activities. He claimed the group staged a seizure of the KKO network and confirmed that investigations are ongoing, including reports of foreign casualties during the event.
The general noted tensions along the Myanmar-Thailand border. He asserted that while some shelling incidents could not be fully denied, certain KNU elements deliberately fired into Thai territory to create misunderstandings. He emphasized the continued operation of bilateral border mechanisms at township, district, and regional levels.
Targeted Action Against Online Gambling
Police Brig Gen Kyaw Lin reported that authorities pursued 107 online gambling cases in 2025. Additionally, from 2023 to 2025, over 2,000 social media accounts linked to gambling were blocked. More than 2,300 SIM cards were disabled to disrupt illegal operations.
Maj Gen Zaw Min Tun clarified that not all ethnic armed organisations were involved in illicit activities. He stressed the need to separate bad actors from compliant members. Furthermore, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eradicating online fraud and prosecuting offenders wherever they operate.
Cross-Border Collaboration Intensifies
Myanmar is strengthening trilateral cooperation with Thailand and China to dismantle networks operating across borders. Police Lt Gen Win Zaw Moe confirmed ongoing coordinated operations and legal actions. These actions are under the Anti-Terrorism Law and Unlawful Associations Act. Authorities also plan to collaborate with ASEANAPOL and Interpol where necessary to ensure effective enforcement.
