New Zealand Online Casino Bill Clears First Reading in Parliament

New Zealand National Parlement

Strong Support in Initial Vote

New Zealand’s Online Casino Gambling Bill has successfully passed its first reading in Parliament, advancing a major step toward regulating the country’s digital gaming sector. Lawmakers in New Zealand voted 83 in favour and 39 against the proposed legislation.

Focus on Player Protection

Internal Affairs Minister Brooke van Velden, who introduced the bill, said:

“The most important part of this bill is protecting New Zealanders who enjoy gambling online by introducing robust safety measures for licensed operators.” In New Zealand, she emphasized the importance of sharing views.

She encouraged the public to share their views when the bill moves to the select committee stage.

Aiming to Reduce Gambling Harm

Supporters believe the bill will help reduce gambling harm, given the currently unregulated state of online casino gaming. Lawmakers in New Zealand expect feedback from industry groups and the public to help fine-tune the legislation.

Licensing and Age Restrictions

Under the New Zealand bill, the government plans to auction up to 15 online casino licenses, each valid for three years. Strict rules will prohibit anyone under 18 from gambling online, with significant fines for companies that fail to comply.

The auction process could begin next year, with interested bidders invited to register as early as June.
