PAGCOR Funds NBI to Combat Illegal Gambling in the Philippines

The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) is taking direct action to combat illegal gambling by providing financial support to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

Under a newly signed memorandum of agreement, PAGCOR pledged an additional PHP 50 million ($859,000), releasing PHP 25 million immediately during the signing ceremony.

PAGCOR Chairman and CEO Alejandro H. Tengco stressed that the partnership strengthens efforts to target unlawful gaming, including the now-banned Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs). He said, “Illegal gambling operators undermine our laws, exploit our people, and put our communities at risk. By working hand in hand with the NBI, we send a strong message that we will not allow unlawful gaming practices to persist.”

NBI Director Jaime Santiago welcomed PAGCOR’s assistance, noting that it allows the bureau to intensify operations against illegal POGOs and other unlawful gaming activities. He added, “This partnership affirms our shared duty to uphold the law and protect the Filipino people.”

Earlier, PAGCOR allocated another PHP 50 million to help deport foreign workers employed by now-illegal POGOs, which were banned in Summer 2024, with work permits expiring by year-end.

PAGCOR’s mission focuses on regulating the Philippine gaming industry and safeguarding government revenues. By supporting the NBI, PAGCOR ensures that the regulated sector thrives while illegal operators face consequences.

Together, PAGCOR and the NBI aim to protect communities, uphold legal standards, and reinforce public trust in the nation’s gaming ecosystem.
