Philippines has introduced new safeguards across its national free internet program. The government confirms that online gambling and adult websites are blocked on all government-provided public Wi-Fi connections.
The policy, implemented by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), aims to create a safer online environment. In particular, it supports students and underserved communities accessing public internet services.
Filtering System Targets Gambling and Adult Content
According to DICT officials, advanced filtering technologies are now embedded within the country’s expanding Free Wi-Fi for All initiative. These systems actively prevent access to gambling platforms and inappropriate content across all connected networks.
Assistant Secretary June Vincent Manuel-Gaudan confirmed that the restrictions apply nationwide. This is especially true in schools and educational institutions where internet access is being rapidly expanded.
Focus Shifts Beyond Connectivity to Digital Safety
While the program primarily aims to improve internet access in remote and disadvantaged areas, authorities emphasize that digital safety is equally important. As a result, the DICT is working closely with the Department of Education. They seek to promote responsible online behaviour.
This includes:
- Digital literacy initiatives for students
- Cybersecurity awareness programs
- Training for teachers, parents, and local communities
By combining infrastructure with education, the government seeks to ensure that increased connectivity does not lead to increased exposure to harmful content.
Expansion of Free Wi-Fi Across Remote Regions
The latest rollout includes 324 free Wi-Fi hotspots across 108 schools in Zamboanga del Sur. This move significantly improves access in geographically isolated areas.
At the same time, officials noted that users may still attempt to bypass restrictions using VPNs. However, the government continues to strengthen monitoring and filtering systems to address these challenges.
Cybersecurity Measures Strengthened Nationwide
DICT’s Cybersecurity Bureau is also actively involved. The agency reportedly blocks thousands of cyberattack attempts daily and supports other government agencies in securing digital infrastructure.
These efforts form part of a broader push to enhance cybersecurity resilience while expanding public internet access.
Part of Wider Crackdown on Illegal Online Activity
The move aligns with the Philippines’ increasing focus on regulating online content. It also aims to tackle illegal digital activities, including unlicensed gambling and cybercrime.
